However, what exactly is depth of knowledge?

What distinguishes Webb's DOK levels from academic frameworks and taxonomies such as Bloom's, Marzano's, or the SOLO Taxonomy?

Why is the DOK Wheel inaccurate?

How do Webb's DOK levels designate the depth and extent students must transfer, use, and share their learning?

How could Webb's DOK levels be used to assess and align the cognitive demand of academic standards and curricular and assessment items?

Erik M. Francis, author of Now THAT'S a Good Question! How to Promote Cognitive Rigor Through Classroom Questioning, will explain what exactly is depth of knowledge and how Webb's DOK levels serve as the following:

STANDARDS-BASED GRADING WITH DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE (DOK)

By the end of these trainings, educators will not only have an accurate and deeper understanding of what exactly is depth of knowledge but also how they can use Webb's DOK levels to develop and deliver deeper, student-centered teaching and learning experiences that will challenge students to think deeply and express and share their learning in detail, insightfully, and in their own unique way.

DOK Standards-Based Lesson Plan developed by Maverik Education LLC, (c) 2018

Participants will learn the following:

  • What is the history and purpose of depth of knowledge?
  • How does depth of knowledge address education policy?
  • How is depth of knowledge a matter of cognitive demand?
  • How can Webb's DOK levels be used to code and compare academic standards, frameworks, and assessments?
  • How can Webb's DOK levels be superimposed with Bloom's Revised Taxonomy to measure the cognitive rigor of curricular and assessment items?
  • How could Webb's DOK levels be used to set the instructional focus and ceilings of assessment for for student learning?
  • How could Webb's DOK levels be used to develop and deliver deeper, student-centered learning experiences?

Participants will learn the following:

  • What is the DOK ceiling of assessment for academic standards and assessments?
  • How can Webb's DOK Levels be used to determine the ceiling of assessment for standards and assessments?
  • How can the ABCDs of Depth of Knowledge (DOK) DOK be used to set ceilings of assessment and criteria for student performance?
  • How could a standards-based grading report card and student progress reports be developed and used to measure and monitor the level of thinking and depth of knowledge students must demonstrate and communicate?

Participants will learn how to develop and deliver teaching and learning experiences similar to the following game shows and reality competitions:

  • DOK-1 / Jeopardy! and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?: Require students to answer questions, address problems, and accomplish tasks correctly.
  • DOK-2 /Top Chef and Hell's Kitchen: Challenge students to demonstrate and communicate how they can use what they have learned to answer questions, address problems, accomplish tasks, and analyze texts and topics.
  • DOK-3 / Survivor and The Apprentice: Engage students to think deeply and express and share how and why they could use what they have learned to defend and explain their outcomes, results, or solutions.
  • DOK-4 / Shark Tank: Encourage students to think critically and creatively how they could transfer, use, and share what they have learned insightfully, innovatively, and in their own unique way.

Participants will learn how to use Mager's ABCDs of Instructional Objectives and Webb's DOK levels to unwrap the performance objectives of academic standards and learning targets to determine the following:

  • Audience: Who are the students or learners who will demonstrate and communicate their learning?
  • Behavior: What is the type(s) of thinking to be demonstrated and the topic to be taught and learned?
  • Conditions: What are the circumstances, context, situation, or stipulations for students to demonstrate and communicate their learning?
  • Depth: How deeply and extensively must students transfer, use, and share their learning?

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES (PLC) WITH DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE (DOK)

MAVERIK EDUCATION LLC offers the following workshops on Teaching and Learning for Depth of Knowledge.  These workshops can be presented as a whole staff development training, a train the trainer model, or as a series of workshops provided over one or more academic years.   All trainings are followed up and supported with collegial coaching and peer-to-peer guidance through instructional rounds and one-on-one mentoring.

GOOD QUESTIONS FOR DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE (DOK)

Participants will learn the following:

  • How to establish the goals, expectations, and norms of a professional learning community (PLC)
  • How to create and maintain relationships between and responsibilities of members of a PLC
  • How to develop PLC goals using the performance objectives of academic standards
  • How to unwrap the performance objectives of academic standards using Mager's ABCDs of Instructional Objectives
  • How to use the ABCDs of Depth of Knowledge to set ceilings of assessment, establish checkpoints for understanding, and determine gaps in learning

Teaching and Learning FOR Depth of Knowledge

THE ABCDs OF DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE (DOK)

The cognitive rigor of college and career ready standards and assessments expect students to demonstrate higher levels of thinking as categorized by Bloom's Revised Taxonomy and communicate depth of knowledge as designated by the four DOK levels established by Dr. Norman A. Webb.

Professional Development on Teaching and Learning Depth of Knowledge

  • A Mission to Address the Expectations and Assessments of Education Policy
  • A Matter of Cognitive Demand and Context for Student Learning
  • A Means to Code and Compare Academic Standards and Assessment Items
  • A Measure of Cognitive Rigor (But Not Higher Order Thinking)
  • A Method to Develop and Deliver Deeper Teaching and Learning Experiences
  • A Model for Standards-Based Grading and Learning

MORE WORKSHOPS COMING SOON!

Participants will learn the following:

  • What are the 8 kinds of good questions that challenge students to demonstrate higher levels of thinking and communicate depth of knowledge?
  • How can Webb's DOK Levels be used to determine the overall cognitive demand of performance objectives of academic standards and learning targets?
  • How can the ABCDs of DOK be used to set the instructional focus and ceilings of assessment for deeper, student-centered learning experiences?
  • How could DOK performance objectives be rephrased into good questions that will challenge students to demonstrate and communicate their learning?
  • How could DOK performance objectives be created and rephrased into good driving questions that will engage students in deeper, student-centered learning experiences that go beyond the DOK ceiling of assessment of academic standards?
